Antioxidants reduce inflammation & Chronic Pain

Help Reduce Inflammation and Chronic Pain with Antioxidants

Antioxidants and Its Benefits

The word antioxidants is often used to show when something is beneficial for our bodies, but do we really know what antioxidants are and how important they are to keeping us healthy, our inflammation low and disease at bay?

Antioxidants are molecules that help to reduce oxidative stress in the body. Oxidative stress is the imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in the body. When the body has more free radicals than antioxidants, the free radicals cause cellular damage over time and cell damage causes inflammation, which then creates disease. Oxidative stress also plays a big role in the aging process.

Some of the diseases that can happen when the body has prolonged oxidative stress are:

  • cancer
  • parkinsons and alzheimers
  • heart disease
  • inflammatory conditions
  • diabetes

There are several different factors that can cause oxidative stress on the body. Some of these factors include:

  • diet
  • smoking
  • radiation
  • pollution
  • lifestyle habits

We now know what oxidative stress is and how it can have a negative impact on the body, but what are free radicals and what is their role?

Free radicals are unstable atoms missing one or more electrons. When the atom is unstable it can cause damage to our cells, causing illness and aging. There are a few different factors that cause free radicals in the body.

These factors include:

  • ozone
  • cigarette smoke
  • pesticides

Antioxidants help to stabilize these free radicals by donating an electron. When we have a good amount of antioxidants in the body, it helps to neutralize the oxidative stress, caused by free radicals. Having a good amount of antioxidants in the body helps to reduce inflammation and when inflammation is reduced, chronic pain symptoms reduce as well.

Now that we know how free radicals affect our bodies and how antioxidants can combat the damage that free radicals and oxidative stress cause, the question is, where do we get antioxidants from?

Antioxidants come in many forms. Whether you get them from food such as, fruits and vegetables, or from quality supplements. The goal is to give your body a good dose of antioxidants daily to help combat disease, boost immunity, help reduce the effects of aging on the body,

Let’s talk diet!

Having a well balanced diet is crucial when it comes to filling your body with antioxidants. We all have heard many doctors talk about the importance of eating fruits and/or vegetables with every meal, but how do we do this with busy schedules. The best way to start implementing a healthy diet into your routine is by taking small steps.

Incorporate healthier options into each meal. Not only will this help to increase the amount of antioxidants in your body, but it will also help you to lose weight and feel better.

Here are some things that you can do today to help increase antioxidants and reduce oxidative stress:

  • cut out fast food and processed food
  • cut out soda and other sugary drinks
  • stop smoking
  • limit foods high in sugar
  • increase fruit/vegetable intake
  • get 7-8 hours of sleep
  • daily light/moderate exercise
  • reduce alcohol consumption

Let’s Talk Supplements!

Another way to quickly increase you antioxidants are through quality supplements. It’s important to know that not all supplements are treated equal though. People can spend hundreds of dollars on supplements that may not work.

That’s why I have done extensive research and found a brand of supplements that have shown to increase my antioxidant level to the highest it’s ever been.

How do I know this, you ask?

At Integrated Spine, Pain and Wellness we have a Pharmanex Scanner that measures the carotenoids in your tissue. Carotenoids are a type of antioxidant. The scanner can tell you the level of carotenoids or antioxidants you have in your tissue. It gives you a grade based on the level or number you’re at. The scanner then gives an overview on things that could be contributing to your score. When we first received the scanner my antioxidant levels were not great, which was surprising because I take a shoe box full of supplements every day. I was scoring at C level.  I started taking Pharmanex supplements and within three months my score was at an A+. In fact my score has been higher than my wife, who regularly is scoring at an A level all done with just diet alone and no supplements.

This goes to show you that there are many ways to increase your antioxidant levels, whether it be through diet and lifestyle habits or by supplements, there are a few different ways to reduce oxidative stress and increase the antioxidants in your body. At ISPW we are here to give you the tools to help you live the healthiest life possible.

For more information on Pharmanex supplements visit our site to see what exact supplements we recommend, or come into the office and get a scan! They are very affordable and have a low cost of just $20. You can then go over your score with Dr. Goyle and figure out which supplements would be right for you. Call today to make an appointment.
